You want to be assured that
you are making the right decision for your parent. You feel torn about choosing nursing care
that is best for him or her.
Fortunately, there are a myriad of options from which to choose, one
that will suit your particular set of needs and wants.
Care by Family Members
Some families choose to
take turns in caring for an elderly parent or relative. The key is to have a schedule that every
family member can agree upon. Either the
senior can stay at home if able to and receive daily visits by relatives to
assure that they are coping well with routine daily living. They may prepare a meal for the senior or
spend the night. A Family Care Plan might require the
senior to sell their home and live with one relative or be on a rotating
schedule with several relatives. The
second option is very difficult for the elderly who like the independence of
living in their own home. Some siblings
will even pay one sibling to take on the full-time role of caregiver for the
elderly parent or relative. This is all contingent on the elderly
individual’s ability to function mostly independent with routine daily living
functions such as bathing and taking prescribed medication without supervision.
Nursing Homes
A senior that
requires around-the-clock nursing care or cannot handle daily self-care would
be best served with a Nursing Care Plan. Within
this subgroup, there are also skilled nursing facilities. In the United States,
each state licenses its nursing homes.
That means that the homes must pass stringent guidelines regarding
patient care. The services provided in
nursing homes are quite comprehensive:
nurses, nursing aides, nursing assistants, occupational therapists,
speech therapists, physical therapists, social workers, recreational assistants
as well as room and board.
Assisted Living
Another type of
Family
Health Nursing Care is a hybrid of nursing homes and home care for seniors. It is assisted living facilities. It offers independence yet medical overview
and assistance to seniors. This
situation is a great compromise for the elderly and the family of the
elderly. There is some assistance given
depending on the specific needs of the senior.
Some aspects may include bathing, grooming, ambulating and monitoring as
well as dispensing daily medications.
Specialized Services
Other
Nursing Care Plans may
include services that are need on a daily basis or as the need arises. Two examples include adult daycare services
and rehabilitation services.
