Greece is a really popular tourist destination and the islands especially have become crowded with more and more visitors each year. Most of these resort locations revolve completely around holidaymakers and so contain wall-to-wall bars and resorts. If you want the type of holiday that is all about lying on the beach all day and drinking through the night then these places will suit you perfectly, but if you want something a bit different then you might want to go off the beaten track and see a bit more of Greece. The ideal solution would be to do a bit of both; a week relaxing and a week exploring.
The great thing about going to the less touristy locations is that they offer a real chance to see life in Greece. In many of the islands the locals see far too many tourists and so often develop a cynical attitude towards them. They understand that they rely on tourists for business, but for many these foreign visitors will be something that they just have to put up with during the summer months. When you spend months of the year watching thousands of young, and not so young, tourists getting drunk and into all kinds of mischief it probably takes a bit of effort to remain so welcoming.
If you travel to the less touristy parts of the country then you will meet many people who are genuinely delighted to see the visitor. The people of Greece are among the friendliest in the world and they will really make a fuss over strangers. You will find some rural locations where life has changed little over the centuries, and it is almost impossible to not fall in love with these peaceful havens.
Mainland Greece is often neglected by visitors who just want to get to the islands and the luxury resorts so that they can party. This is a shame because this part of the country really offers some great places to visit. One nice way to do it is to rent a car and just spend a week or two travelling around the country. If you enjoy spontaneity then don't make any plans but just drive around and see where you end up. This is bound to lead to a memorable holiday and you will get to see places that few other tourists get to enjoy.
At the end of the day we only have so much holiday time each year, and we will all have our own way that we prefer to spend it. Some people will want to party for two weeks while others will just want to do nothing except lie on the beach or by the pool. It is worth making the effort to see some of the less touristy parts of the country though. This will most likely end up providing you with your fondest memories of the whole trip. Even if you just take a couple of days away from the pools and tourist bars it will be worth.
