The economy of India is highly enduring, in fact, it is the only economy in the world that has been able to survive recession successfully. The mushrooming of diverse industries in India has led to opening up of many new and exciting avenues for youngsters. But these new fields necessitate the need for a workforce well equipped with specific skill sets. This deficit of professionals and the growing demand for quality training has been well recognized by educational institutes and colleges in India.

There is a huge variety of short-term and long-term courses available, offering certification, diploma and degree. 3D animation courses, computer courses, IT courses, courses in software and hardware, various BPO skills courses, foreign language courses, accountancy courses, stenography courses, mobile assembly and repairing courses, courses in ticketing and tourism, etc are few among the myriad of vocational courses exposed to students to enable them get hired immediately. These professional courses can be attended along with the regular college degree and offer support in upgrading the skills and keeping oneself up-to-date. Students can now think of career beyond engineering, law, medicine or teaching and get easily absorbed in the job of their interest.

But as the saying goes, ‘every coin has two sides’; every thing has its own advantages and limitations. With a string of choices for the courses and institutes available, it often becomes strenuous and confusing for a student to determine his/her own interests. Selecting the right kind of professional course and institute holds an extremely high value as the whole path of career ultimately depends on the same. A student must always opt for a course that blends well with his/ her personality and career aspirations as well as helps in exploring right kind of opportunities in the job market. Students, generally, have the tendency of making a choice depending on interests of their friends and peers. But the wise thing to do is never to follow the herd mentality and instead figure out what appeals to you the most and if you would want to pursue it throughout your career actively. Choosing a course just because of some friends or based on hearsay is definitely not the right approach towards building your career.

Ask yourself few questions and consider the following things while selecting a professional course:

1.)        Try to establish the future scope of the field you are choosing. Make searches and find out about the companies offering jobs in the same.

2.)        Make sure you give a go ahead to the course only if your search ensures that it will provide you with enough job opportunities in the coming years.

3.)        You must also check if the skill set would remain in demand for a long time and not become redundant by the time your course is completed.

4.)        Try talking to experts from the same field or discuss with seniors to get a know how of the future job market. You can also seek some professional advice that can be helpful in making you aware of the demand of skill sets in near future.

5.)        Introspection is very important at this stage. Know more about yourself, about your aptitude, personality traits, temperaments, etc.

6.)        Since investments required in some courses can be higher, make sure that the course you are planning to attend is affordable and is capable of giving you good returns later in future.

When you are through with the research on future prospects of your field, look for the top colleges offering the course in India or abroad. You would find a sea of options but you must select the most suitable institute that can help you achieve your professional goals. Also, calculate which institute can offer best value for your money before taking up a loan. Avoid taking a liability on yourself and ensure the means of repaying before borrowing the money.

Keeping all the above mentioned factors in mind can help you select the right course for yourself. Be socially and financially aware to have a long successful career.
