The TOEFL writing section plays a very crucial role in the entire admission process of a candidate. This measures your overall ability to write in standard academic English. There are two tasks cut out for students in this section: TOEFL Independent Writing and TOEFL Integrated Writing.  This article contains strategies for TOEFL Integrated Writing.

Under TOEFL integrated writing, the time limit is 20 minutes and you are asked to give your response using 150-225 words. The first passage is based on reading and the second on listening. The test-makers want to assess whether you can understand materials coming from two different sources: reading and listening, and can produce a coherent, well-structured, and summarized piece of writing by combining information collected from those sources. Test-makers also test your ability to compare the information obtained and draw conclusion from them. You’ll approximately get 3 minutes to read a passage after which the passage will be hidden and you’ll listen to a 2-minutes lecture that is related to the reading passage. The lecture that you’ll listen may add up new information or explain what is there in the reading passage or present a different view point. You’re suggested to make important notes from both the passages.

Since TOEFL Test requires you to type your responses using the key board, practicing on key board will certainly help you a lot. Focus on building your vocabulary systematically. Use different grammatical structures in your sentences. Remember that a good number of new words used along with varied sentence structures in your essay can really impress the raters.

Learn thoroughly the different structures of an essay that comprises three parts: Introduction, Body and Conclusion. Develop your essay based on the important features of all these three components. Organize your essay and write a coherent and convincing essay following the transitional words. List a number of selective topics and start writing them on a regular basis. Try to be time effective and also monitor your improvement continuously.
