Well designed furniture is a vital aspect of a child’s room. It helps to augment the look of their room. While selecting nursery furnitures four basic things should be kept in mind—safety, budget, design and durability.

Buying nursery furnitures is a big task for new parents. Every parent has a desire to create a beautiful space for their child to grow up in. But taking it back to basics, a perfect kid’s room must comprise of key elements: cots, cupboards, nursery storage and sitting arrangements. It’s also incredibly important to consider the security and safety of your child when planning any kids room.  By tackling the basics (and selecting the right furniture from the right children shop) you can easily create the perfect room for your child.

Tips for buying the appropriate nursery furnitures:

  • Consider your color and theme: Although it is traditional to choose a colour or theme depending on the gender of the child, neutral colours like white, orange and green work equally well and are less restrictive.

  • Cots: A cot is the most essential furniture because it is here where your baby will initially spend a large amount of their time (hopefully!). When selecting a cot it is essential to ensure that it complies with current safety regulations. It should be deep enough to prevent your baby from climbing out. It is also essential to ensure that the mattress is a comfortable fit and does not leave a gap of more than 4cm to stop your little one from getting trapped.

  • While designing nursery plans always ensures that no nursery furnitures should be located near windows. If there are any windows make sure that they are always locked. When opened for airing, open up to 5cm.

  • Changing dressers and tables: It’s essential to have a space to lay your baby down to change nappies. Changing tables typically have a shelf underneath and at the top they have a changing mat. Whereas changing dressers have drawers integrated in them. As the baby grows up, the changing table becomes more redundant. On the other hand the changing dresser can be used as a standard dresser by simply removing the mat. There are also space saving solutions such as the Swedish Brio Cot Top Changer, which simply attaches to the top of the cot, saving valuable floor space.

  • Nursery storage: At some point you will find that it is essential to have nursery storage for your child as the mass of baby essentials, and toys increase. Choose toy chests that are lightweight, child friendly and consider those which have no lid. Cupboard and wardrobe doors can be dangerous for your child. To prevent your child from injuries, nursery furnitures should have safe mechanisms fitted on them.

  • Baby bassinets: These are useful for your child from the time of birth up to 4 months. So select a bassinet only if it is required for your baby.

  • Materials and finishes: Most children shop provide nursery furnitures that are usually made of veneers, wood or artificial materials. Wooden furniture no doubt is the most expensive but it is more durable than any other material.

  • Baby stroller: Firstly decide on the kind of stroller that you want for your child. This will enable you to make the best choice. Consider whether you want your pram to be forward facing, rear facing, or both. It’s nice and comforting for your baby to be able to see you when they are younger, but as they develop, you may want to stimulate them more, by having them face “out to the world”, so strollers that can do both are great. You may also want to consider whether you want a complete travel system, with a pram / stroller that has a car seat integrated, so you simply lift the whole unit off the pram and into the car and vice versa.  Look around at the options and make a shortlist of what’s important to you before deciding on a final model.
