Computers are the main source of connectivity these days. People are mostly dependent on computers for their major share of work. Whether its completing the college assignments, teaching lessons, work presentations or doing a long distant chat for almost free, computer or information technology has enabled human being in coming out with the speedy solutions of almost everything.

Not only computers, anything or everything which is mechanical and reduces the work load of human being comes under the scanner of being wanted. The field of technology is advancing with the time and with people getting more curious about these developments; its popularity is increasing day by day. All these technological developments are broadly divided into two terms hardware and software. Hardware is the hard or the body part of the machine, whereas software is the data stored in the machine, due to which its application is possible.

These days, students also are very much inquisitive about developments around them, this leads to their increasing interest in the field of technology. The’ why’ and ‘how’ of machine parts have resulted in many students adopting software and technology as their career fields. Software is the first and the foremost thing to be stored in any computerized machine to make it work. Starting from computers, to I- pods to mobile phones, everything is based on one or the other software. Even the world of internet is also based on softwares which enables the global connectivity of the masses and makes the world a more communicative and interesting place to live.

Mainly students aiming to pursue software courses, take Bachelors in Computer Application as their graduation degree, then post graduation in which they get to learn more about software and different computer languages in their speacialisation stage of Masters in Computer Application. The courses can vary according to the need of the student.

The different fields in software, which a student can take as his career, are:

v     System Software: System Software is the software responsible for the functioning of the computer hardware and the system as a whole. The various elements to be learnt by a student in this category are operating systems, windowing systems, device drivers, utilities and servers. The purpose of these softwares is to provide an ease in the working of the engineers, while correcting the computer parts like printer, drivers, display screens, keyboards, etc.

v     Programming Software: These softwares are in the form of tools which helps the operator while designing the computer programmes or softwares in different computer languages. Some of these tools which help in the implementation of the same are compilers, text editors, linkers, debuggers and interpreters.

v     Application Software: These softwares may or may not be related to computers. Their application can be seen in varied ranges of products like internet communications, medical or educational softwares, video games, word processing, industrial automation, software for designing or animation like Photoshop, Corel Draw, illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, etc.

The courses in computers can be of four types or from four categories of institutions:

v     Courses from the university

v     Courses offered by software multinationals like Microsoft, Oracle, Sun, etc.

v     Computer language and IT courses provided by DOEACC

v     Degree or diploma courses offered by small or large institutes affiliated from Indian or foreign universities.

The top most computer institutes providing courses in the field of software are:

  • Bangalore Institute of Technology, Bangalore
  • Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Rajasthan
  • Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
  • Department of Computer Science, Delhi University Delhi.
  • School of Computer & Systems Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi
  • School of Maths & Computer Information Sciences, Hyderabad.
  • Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
  • Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala, Punjab
  • Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh, UP.
  • University of Roorkee, Roorkee, UP

Students aspiring for career in computer software can apply in any of these colleges or other Computer institutes to get a qualified and valuable degree in the same field. The career in this field is very innovative due to the frequent advancements in technology; therefore, a student must adopt an approach of learning and understanding nee developments easily to grow in his career.
