The cashier asked to see his driver’s license, and the man obliged. He apparently thought that the cashier would feel sorry for him and let him go without paying his check. Instead, the cashier said, “I’m going to have to call the police.”
The customer panicked and ran from the restaurant when the cashier picked up the telephone receiver, leaving his driver’s license behind. The officer took the driver’s license and went to the address listed on the license, and the suspect answered the door. At first, the man denied involvement in the theft, but the officer displayed the driver’s license and asked, “Is this yours?” The suspect lowered his head and admitted the theft.
