The implementation of a suitable fire risk management policy is key to saving lives and reducing unnecessary damage to property and goods.

The risk from fire applies to organisations, domestic properties and commercial enterprises across the globe. Fires can break out at any point of time, and even though you cannot be on your guard 24 hours a day, there are ways to restrict the damage that may be caused by completing a thorough fire risk assessment. It may be necessary for individuals and organisations to approach fire risk management consultants who can assist in planning and implementing solutions to reduce fire risks. Their task is to assess fire risks and provide solutions that would help in dealing with emergency situations, and reduce damage caused to person and property.

The task of the fire risk assessment consultant would involve visiting a client’s premises to conduct an inspection of the building. In addition they would interview the client to determine work processes, approach to fire risk management, routine testing frequencies and current control measure that may be in place. Following this, the consultant would provide a written report detailing the findings of the assessment together with the recommendations for remedial actions.

The most basic steps that are required during the process of fire risk assessment or fire risk management include:

Identification of the hazards that may cause the fire: These include the sources of oxygen, along with ignition sources or other fuel, which may be kept around or in that area.

Identify and point out the individuals at risk: There is no doubt that along with risk to property and damage to goods, there is always the risk of loss of lives. Hence, the fire risk assessment consultants should be able to identify the individuals who would be at most risks in case of a fire outbreak.

Evaluating, and removing the risks: The consultant is bestowed with the task of removing, eradicating, reducing or providing protection from fire risks. As the expert, they must evaluate the risk of a fire occurring, and provide solutions to protect the individuals who are most prone to these risks. Reducing and eliminating the fire hazards is the main objective. Factors that are taken into consideration include detection and warning and they may make recommendations to equip the area with fire-fighting equipment, provide alternative escape routes, install signs and notices along with emergency lighting and they would need to ensure the regular maintenance and testing of such equipment and systems.

Create and formulate a plan: The fire risk assessment consultant would record and plan out the significant findings of the inspection. The specific actions should be implemented and the preparation of an emergency plan would need to be completed. The fire risk assessment consultant may also be involved in the training and instruction of key personnel.

Reviewing: This is a vital part of the fire risk assessment and fire risk management program, involving the regular review of risk assessments and associated control measures to ensure that they remain effective and current.
