Electronic cigarettes are a fairly new product and thus far there is promising evidence they are significantly healthier for you than traditional cigarettes.
Tar, which builds up in the human lungs, causes both cancer and emphysema. The electronic cigarette does not produce any of this tar. E cigarettes produce vapor from a nicotine solution, which consists of nicotine and propylene glycol.
Propylene glycol has been tested at some length by various universities and scientists, thus far there have been no ill effects discovered from inhaling the vapor. In fact the vast majority of these tests were conducted because it is well known at this point that this vapor helps prevent the spread of respiratory disease when it is in the air. It is also labeled by the FDA as “Generally Recognized as Safe” as a food and drug additive and is already in thousands of products including some foods at grocery stores around the globe. Though the names for chemicals always seem a little scary this chemical is not known to have any ill effects on humans rats or monkeys.
In addition to not producing tar tests done by the FDA on regular cigarettes resulted in the findings of over 599 various chemicals. Tests thus far done by the FDA with electronic cigarettes have found a maximum of 17 chemicals in trace amounts. In spite of all this promising scientific evidence electronic cigarettes are more healthy and a much better alternative to smoking there is still a lot of controversy regarding this product.
One can only assume this controversy is caused more by the stigma attached to the word cigarette and not because of any actual scientific fact.
