SmartPhones – Are they here to stay?

A SmartPhone is a multipurpose phone offers a wide range of features such as access to emails, chatting, social networking, watch videos, music, web cam, personal diaries etc. The idea is stay connected anywhere, anytime. Latest smart phones like the Apple iPod and Blackberry also allow users to download hundreds of Applications which can everything from telling u world times to keeping your personal diary. In other words it a miniature PC with advanced functionalities. The powerful processors, large memories and better quality of screens have taken over the traditional generation cellular phones. They have become the most popular form of communication; hence they have proved to be an essential part of today’s society.

The introduction of smart GSM cell phones has led to a complete reversal of winds; people can join in numerous social networking sites which can be remotely operated through their cellular phones, whereas connecting through your PC’s has always been a big headache. They are not only quick but it lets you to be connected with any one no matter where ever he or she is.

A person may be staying in a hotel or walking on a road, attending a meeting or even sitting in a bathroom; just with a click of button you can easily put all your updates to a number of social networking sites. As per a survey conducted recently 57% of people use their smart phones in bathrooms. Online social networking is not only confined to personal use but it is also been considered for a business point of view. In the recent past, businesses have been highly benefited from its use. Businessmen can now sell their merchandise, find property or jobs, enhance their existing businesses or come up with a new ventures. You can have an access to loads of social networking sites such as face book, twitter, Orkut, MySpace etc. One can connect to a customer on both personal and professional level which helps with better promotion of products. It is the easiest, fastest and cheapest way to keep up with both personal and professional needs.

It is truly said that Smart phones have turned dreams into reality. They provide everything a person could ever want from a communications point of view, however,  there are certain flipsides too. They are quite expensive as a result they are not affordable to everyone. Some people believe that it is the fancy of the rich. Such tools cannot be easily operated by everyone and they could feel complicated because sometimes they consist of programs that are difficult to learn. There maybe a need to download new programs in order to have a better performance on a regular basis.

It’s easy to fall in the trap of identity thefts, cyber stalking and internet addiction when one owns a smart phone. Many people are opposed to social networks because such sites encourage unrealistic interpersonal communication. Apart from that excessive use of slang is resulting in deteriorating the standard of our language. As George Orwell said, “If thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought”. It is thereby a threat to the future as the teenagers and kids replace their daily schedule of playing and studying with such unrealistic ideas of gossiping with friends unnecessarily. It may be helpful in making new friends but addiction to social networking or chatting may lead some teenagers to fall in bad company unknowingly.

Lastly, every new technology is geared at making life easier and probably more interesting and smart phones are a good example of the same. As long as one understands both sides of their use and the usage is limited to creating & maintaining healthy and productive personal or work life, they are indeed a gift and can really enhance a lot of aspects in one’s life.

As it is truly said by Helen Keller, “Keep your face to the sunshine and you won’t see the shadow.” So even above all its disadvantages it has now become a vital necessity of our social life. Smart phones are really the future and have made things much simpler for us.
