Diabetes mellitus, a chronic illness that damages responses to insulin production, is one of the most prevalent diseases in the United States today.

Diabetes mellitus, a chronic illness that damages responses to insulin production, is one of the most prevalent diseases in the United States today. Insulin is a hormone that aids the conversion of food into energy. Diabetes is diagnosed in 800,000 Americans and seriously affects nearly 16 million per year. Together, type 1 and 2 Diabetes contribute to over 200,000 deaths per year.

To hinder this rising disease, the Food and Drug Administration has evaluated and administered a variety of products to improve the diagnosis of diabetes. This in turn would help to achieve better control of blood glucose levels.

New devices, or diabetes testing supplies, have been developed to analyze, monitor, and administer medications for Diabetes that have been proven to be far more accurate and easier to use for patients than any predecessors. These new diabetic supplies such as Diabetes testing meters, insulin pumps, infusion sets, wound dressings, skin substitution for foot ulcers and over 100 glucose meters, have administered tighter control of blood glucose levels while enabling patients to better manage their diabetes.

The companies Animas, Deltec, Disetronic, Insulet, Minimed Sooil, Nipro and Valeritas have, with verification from the FDA, produced newer, more efficient Diabetes supplies. Animas Corporation’s OneTouch Ping is a glucose management system with an insulin pump and glucose meter-remote and Deltec has released the Cozmo Gone, the lightest mainstream pump available which has all the features of the OneTouch Ping but eliminates the need to carry an additional meter device.
