There are few tips and preparation you need to know before you start expressing your milk.

Pump your breasts when they are full. If you are away from your baby and you are likely going to miss the feeding, pump it the same time you normally would feed your baby. If you are at work, try to make it a schedule to pump it every 3 hours. Believe it or not, your body gets the signal and produce the milk accordingly. Tips: Early morning is the best time to pump if you want to make a stock.

It is best to pump in a quiet place where you are most unlikely to be interrupted. Make yourself comfortable where ever you are going to express milk. Remember to relax.  If you are at work, make sure that nobody disturb you for 20 minutes. If you are at home, do it when your baby is sleeping or hand your baby to someone for a while.

Make sure that all the equipments used in expressing milk are clean and sterilized.  Once you are done with that session, wash them with hot soapy water. Don't forget to wash your hands before and after. Cleanliness is the most important thing.

Massage your breasts before pumping to encourage the let down. However, most of the breast pumps now have that covered. It will help triggers the let down. But it is good to always massage, feel relaxed and calm before you start expressing milk

Drink lots of water. Don't ever put yourself in the situation where you feel you are dehydrating.  Drink something before and after your pumping session.

If you need a book to read or radio to listen while you express your milk, have everything ready. Don't get up and do stuffs while you are pumping if you do not need to.

Just think of your baby. This alone can help the flow of the milk. It is natural process of the human body.
