An unplanned pregnancy may be such a traumatic experience that a woman will seek pregnancy termination. It is certainly better to have an abortion under the care of medical professionals so that risks are minimised. Counselling should also be sought to help with both the decision to terminate and the emotional trauma afterwards.

Unplanned pregnancies can be extremely traumatic for some women who may feel that the only way they can cope is by terminating the pregnancy. But pregnancy termination should not be undertaken lightly; many women who terminate their pregnancy need to undergo counselling for the emotional trauma that surfaces afterwards.

While abortion services are now available through professional abortion clinics where women are treated with respect and a caring attitude, every woman should be sure to get all the abortion info that she needs before making the decision to terminate.

No pregnancy termination decision should be undertaken lightly – and most are not of course; women know how precious that new life is. It is just that in many cases having a baby may be considered an impossible burden.

It is important for women who are considering pregnancy termination to get help and advice as soon as possible. All medical procedures carry risk and abortion is no different. But choosing pregnancy termination in the earliest stages of pregnancy – prior to 12 weeks – is the safest time. A medical doctor should be consulted to discuss the procedure and risks involved. If you are pregnant and unsure of what you should do, then counselling should be undergone to discuss other options such as adoption.

Abortions should be done in a hospital or clinic. The procedure for those in their first trimester only takes around 15 minutes, but extra time must be allowed for counselling, preparation and recovery. A light, general anaesthetic is usually administered and an antibiotic given afterwards to reduce risk of infection.

Cramps and bleeding can be expected after the procedure is completed, with some women feeling really tired or even sick due to the anaesthetic. Driving should not be undertaken within twelve hours, and the doctor’s instructions for aftercare should be followed to prevent problems developing.

It is possible that counselling may be needed to overcome the emotional trauma experienced afterwards.
