What Is Expected Of You As A Team Leader

It is quite common these days for anybody responsible and deserving  to receive the promotion for being a Team Leader. And it is very usual these days to find some organizations somebody referred to as team leader who typically oversees and looks after ranging from 5 to 10 workers most normally. So, perhaps you are thinking about becoming one or you have been recently promoted as one? Well, a friend of mine was a team leader so he knows what it’s like and what it is all about. It's a bizarre world out there, and this job could be dangerous for you if you are not at all familiar with the terrain and territory. Nevertheless, if you play it right, then you could get a lot out of it. In this article, the discussion will focus on avoiding the traps and getting the most out of it. The thing about this job is to always try to delegate as much tasks as you could possibly can. Most people when they become promoted as team leaders, they become control freaks. They have more responsibilities and authority now, and any errors and mistakes by their subordinates may reflect badly on them, so they decide to play it safe and perform several of important tasks themselves. Oh come on, forget about it; you would just burn out from undue stress if you try to do this. You have got to trust your staff to perform their work and give a clear process which shows to everybody what is expected of them and  what will take place if they slack off and fail to comply and stick to the rules and policies. If you set a rule base and somebody still keeps on breaking it then your superiors or bosses would know that it’s not you that is the problem but one of your team members. And of course, now comes the money. Bear in mind that your being a good worker also comes with a price. You now request and charge a quality rate which is reflective of your high worth. Therefore, whatever you do, don’t just accept it if your boss or supervisor tries to assign you this task for free. Remember, you have more tasks and responsibilities now, so you should be paid for it. A typical trick is trying to place a new team leader on a “trial”. It is a scheme devised to save the company some money so your boss could impress the senior management. Do not accept it and be certain you get paid beforehand, or if they are persistent, then consent to a backdated pay and get it in writing by e-mail. If you become a walkover at this early phase and lack the “balls” or the guts, then you would get walked over almost all the time when you would become full-time team leader. Show them strength and the “nerve” and you will get respect. These are just two of the numerous tips to be a good and effective team leader, yet they are also two of the most significant ones.
