Night Vision Devices (NVD’s) are very sophisticated bits of kit, but they are rarely the all-singing gadgets that are now so ubiquitous in action films and spy stories. The chief purpose of a night vision device is to see in the dark and not to magnify far off images to the same extent as a telescope or binoculars. The distance that a night vision device can see effectively is dependant on a few different variables.
Type of Observation Most importantly, just what is it that is being observed? Maybe the object of observation is a boat out at sea or an animal in the woods? Obviously, the larger an object is, the easier it is to see. Is the purpose of the observation to see details (also known as recognition range) or just to ascertain the location of something? Maybe a movement will be the only thing observed and it will be unclear exactly who or what is responsible for that movement. This is known as detection range.
Ambient Light Starlight, moonlight, and infrared light are good examples of ambient light. The more ambient light is available, the better, as it allows for further vision. It is always possible to see further on a night when the moon and stars are out, than on a cloudy night which is overcast. Typically, it should be possible to tell the difference between a man and a woman, or a fox and a deer at around one-hundred yards. However, looking across an open field on a clear night with a decent amount of moonlight would make it quite possible to see a house that was five-hundred yards away.
