At times, the word document starts exhibiting some alien characters that look like square shaped characters. These kinds of characters are displayed when the word document gets corrupt.

If you are use MS Word frequently, then you must have come across a situation when all the words in your document are displayed as square box-like characters. This situation takes place quite often. Quite possible, you might not have gone through this even once but the fact is, all MS Word users come across this problem. This situation usually arises when the MS Word document experiences corruption. In majority of cases, a corrupt document displays some unusual characters which make it difficult for user to read the data stored.

In order to retrieve your data back from the damaged file, you have to use a backup file. However, this resolution will work only if you have an updated valid backup of the document. But in case you don’t have a valid backup available, you might fall short of retrieving important data. This is the high time that you need a help of repair word tool to recover all the data from the corrupt Word document.

In a similar case, the helpdesk executive had to deal with this MS Word issue. An employee called up and told him about the issue. Employee had created a few documents that started showing some weird signs and characters. The text, symbols or characters were replaced with square boxes. Unexpectedly, all his word documents were stored in ‘My Documents’ folder and none of them were found healthy. All the documents displayed the same square shaped characters.

MS Word documents display this kind of behavior when these documents have experienced some kind of damage or corruption. Pertaining to this issue, the document firstly will not open and even if it gets open, it will display strange characters instead of the text that was actually entered. This is the reason why the entire data that was previously added to the document becomes inaccessible or exhibits alien characters. In order to resolve this issue, you can follow the measures given here:

  •  Use ‘Detect and Repair’ feature of MS Word to recover the contents of the corrupt or damaged Word documents.
  •  You can search for a template file of MS Word, named normal.dot and delete or rename the file. With this, a blank template file will be created in case of deletion of normal.dot file. This template file is highly prone to corruption and might lead to many other problems.
  •  Run an anti-virus with updated DAT files might also work for security of your MS Word file.

However, if all these measures fail, then you have to switch to repair word tools to retrieve your important data. These third party repair word applications are devised with specialized scanning algorithms to repair corrupt word files and retrieve important data.
