You can plan your way out of debt. Start by surveying the situation to get a complete picture. Then research your options by getting expert
debt consolidation advice. Finally you put your plan in place and monitor and update it as the situation unfolds.
Surveying the damage
After a fire or flood the insurance company will send in an assessor or adjuster to see how much damage there has occurred. In debt reduction you need to be just as thorough and just as honest. It won’t help you if you don’t factor in that student loan that doesn’t bill you any more, it may come back at any time. Lay all of your bills on your kitchen table and calculate the amount owing on them, including any missed payments, and what the minimum monthly payments may be. Then take your pay stub and compare the amounts. Can you afford to make these payments or not?
Research Your Options
If you can’t afford the payments then you need to look at other options. One is to talk to your friendly neighborhood banker and see if they can help. Another is to talk to a personal finance or debt counselor to hear what they have to say. Still another is to talk to an expert in the debt consolidation loan business to see what they have to offer. Check with family members who you trust and ask them if they have ever been in the same position.
Action Planning
Once you have reviewed the options then you need to make a decision, as quickly as you can. Your debt problem will not only not go away, it will get worse. Arrange a loan with your bank or seek out debt consolidation loans online or speak to a debt advisor. That will stem the flow of good money after bad. Then change your credit and spending habits to more closely meet your income. Use credit wisely and sparingly and follow your budget carefully. Then you will be on the road to good financial health and hopefully never have to worry about debt problems again.
