This has been a myth that has been doing the rounds for ages…You wear a cap all the time - and you go bald! It is true that wearing a tight cap in sweltering tropical weather can make your head all sticky and sweaty. Under such conditions, if you don’t take proper care of your hair and wash it regularly, the sweat could get accumulated in the pores of your scalp and cause the hair growth to slow down.

However in colder countries, there is generally no such risk and wearing a cap only keeps your hair warm and protected from the dry weather. As for the hair loss myth, it is probably rooted in the fact that it is mostly the balding men who wear the caps to hide their balding mane.

When people notice the sparse hair on the regular cap-wearers they often jump to the conclusion that it is the cap that is causing the balding, when in fact it is almost always the other way round.

Hair loss, especially Male Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL) which is the most common type of hair loss found in men, is mostly genetic and caused due to the excessive production of a hormone called DHT. So, if your genes happen to have the code for that etched on them, you are in fact quite prone to developing MPHL, whether you wear a cap or a not.

There is prescription medication like Propecia for MPHL now, which is found to be extremely effective for baldness in men. Continuous treatment for around six months is found to arrest hair loss and stimulate the growth of healthy hair.
