There are medical tools which have been designed to aid people in the performance of certain tasks especially if they are no longer capable of completing an expected behavior in the normal manner. Ostomy bags serve as a means to collect the waste from the human body in cases when a patient could no longer discharge in the toilet properly. Ostomy bags are part of the medical pouching systems which deals with urostomies, colostomies and ileostomies.
The Ostomy pouching system is composed of a base plate or a mounting plate and a collection pouch that is attached with an adhesive while collecting waste from the stoma. Ostomy bags are usually referred to as a medical appliance where the term appliance is used to refer to a mechanical substitute for a biological function.
Cleaning your Ostomy appliance highly depends on the kind of Ostomy system you use. There is no standard way of cleaning the system because some may either be closed with a clamp or open ended while others are designed to be disposed after use. However, here are some generic ways to clean bags that are made for a week of use. First, you need to empty the bag with the collected waste. Usually, Ostomy bags which are intended for several use should be emptied when they are filled half way or two-thirds.
Usually bags that are close-ended are should be disposed at once and cleaning is no longer a problem. However, for open-ended bags, you need to detach a clamp that closes them. After emptying them, you need a syringe to clean the bag before having it closed again with a clamp.
Ostomy bags are great help for people who have discharge problem or those undergoing a treatment. It pays to know which kind of bag is suited for you. Once you have cleaned the bag you are using, you also need to see to it that you keep your stoma clean. If you are using tissue paper for cleaning, make sure that no portion of the tissue is left on the surrounding of your stoma.
