When contemplating breast augmentation surgery, many people get stuck on what type of implant to get. They see saline as a safer alternative to silicone. However, medical studies have found that there are no higher rates of illness due to one type of implant or the other. The saline implants have a higher rate of deflation than their cousins do. They also are not as firm. For many patients, these factors take saline implants off the choice list. That leaves only one in the running. These implants make thousands of women very happy every year.

Breast augmentation attempts have been around for quite awhile. However, silicone and saline implants have been around since the 1960’s. The implant companies have developed their current shape and configuration over the decades to eliminate problems and make appearances better. They come in two shapes usually: round or teardrop. The round implants add fullness to the breast. The teardrop shape adds a lower amount of fullness but makes larger in the base. This is a more natural look for many women. However, the round implants remain the favored shape.

The breast augmentation surgery for silicone implants is a bit more invasive than with saline ones. With saline implants, the surgeon puts the implants in and then fills them with a sterile salt solution. With the other type, the implant comes already filled. This means the incision needs to be larger. Since the surgeon makes the cut under the breast, the visible scarring remains minimal. Some surgeries involve putting the implant above the chest muscle while others put it below. The surgeon and patient make the choice prior to the surgery.

When thinking about breast augmentation, go beyond the saline vs. silicone issue. You need to find the right surgeon to perform the procedure. You want someone with experience and knowledge in this area. As with any surgery, there can be complications. Some patients experience pain, bleeding, infection, and excessive scarring. With any cosmetic procedure, some patients are not happy with the results. Since you and the surgeon will not see the results until healing is complete, the final look is hard to predict. One final thing to think about is rupture. Any type of filled implant has the ability to rupture at some point. You will need regular tests to make sure your implant is still intact. If it does rupture, you will need to have it removed and replaced.
