All that you need to do to give the love of your life the perfect gift is head to the pet shop, choose a bright and chirpy bird and pick up a great cage that can attract eyeballs with ease. Having a bird at home is great; they make really good pets, minus the mess that dogs and cats usually create.
Do you instantly think of dogs when you hear the term ‘pets’? You, my friend, need some fresh perspective. Birds can be extremely loyal and companions for life, it all depends on how well you car e for them and keep them alive and kicking. Nobody wants to have a sad and droopy bird dying in its cage in the middle of the house. Taking care of a bird is easy; you just need to know the know-how and basics of bird care. A lot depends on the species of bird that you adopt for a pet. Birds are from extremely diverse backgrounds, and you will be shocked to know that they have their own diet list, there are things you can feed them and things you need to keep away from them for their own good.
Always make sure that you consult the Vet first about what you can feed the bird primarily. Veterinarians are well endowed with such information, and rightfully so. Never get into the mindset thinking that you are smarter than the Doctor. There’s a reason he/she’s got the degree and you don’t. There are some food items that should not be given to a bird, and you don not have to even consult the Vet to know about these. More than that, you should ensure that you prepare these food items really well and perfectly before you can even think of feeding it to the poor creature.
• Chocolate comes first. Yes, men have used chocolate since the dawn of time to woo members of the opposite sex, but then, you can’t have everything in life. Feeding chocolate to your bird can be really harmful to the bird’s digestive tract. The end result will just be disastrous. It can also cause seizures and mental illness in birds, apart from nausea. Keep those candy bars away.
• Think of a bird’s diet and you immediately picture fruits and nuts. Blame it on the cartoons for ingraining a wrong fact into your heads that your bird can eat almost any kind of fruit. Avoid feeding your bird apples, cherries, apricots and peaches. The cyanide present in the seeds of these fruits can be extremely harmful for your bird. You can feed them these fruits as long as you make sure you cut away the core of the fruit and eliminate all seeds. Make sure you use clean fruits too, the pesticides present may not be potent enough to kill you, but will definitely affect your pet.
• Don’t even think of giving the bird some alcohol or caffeine. They cause increased heartbeat and thus, cardiac malfunction.
• Avoid giving your bird salty food, as salt causes dehydration, thirst and ultimately, death.
Make sure you follow these pointers for your bird to lead a healthy life. You’ll enjoy the chirpy company!
