I'm finding that the world of internet marketing is a venture that requires learning many things, but is also very rewarding. As one of my mentors once said, "Just learn as much as you can. Then the money will come."
If you are just getting started in Internet Marketing, as I am, the first thing you need to find is a good web host. There are many good hosting sites, but a lot of them are very complicated and have a sharp learning curve before you really know the basics, and even more before you understand how to use the powerful tools available on the hosts' servers. Many hosts now use a control panel called cPanel, which makes it easy for beginners to do the things they need to do with their website: uploading files, backing up the website, editing their web pages, and even viewing the statistics of how many people are visiting their website. More advanced users also find that it's easier and faster to do things using cPanel than it is using other third party tools.

cPanel offers things like:

  • Spam Assassin, which filters out mail that appears to be spam and puts it in a Spam folder.
  • Autoresponders, which automatically respond to emails coming in, in case you are going to be on vacation or unavailable.
  • File Manager, to manipulate the files on your website, for instance, copying files, deleting files, etc. You can even edit the HTML code of your web pages.
  • Backups, so you can backup your files in case the system goes down.
  • AWStats, so you can see how many people are visiting your website, how many pages they've viewed, and even what country they're from.
  • MySQL databases, which makes it easy to set up and maintain databases within your website.

Most hosting services have video tutorials about the tools within cPanel, and that's enough to get you started. But usually they don't cover the more advanced topics, like email authentication, protecting your downloadable files, redirecting the visitor on an error, website backup, and blocking IP addresses of people that are trying to hack your site. And how do you know who is trying to hack your site? Did you know you can put a blog on your website with just a few clicks of the mouse? These are all things you can do using cPanel. Like I said, I'm just starting out too, but I have learned a lot not only from the video tutorials, but also from videos I've watched at http://www.cpanelexposed.com. These videos explain some of the things that the standard videos do not go into in much detail.
