Although sometimes it’s exaggerated on the truth, it is that late payments or missed payments often have ruined many a credit score.  And as the fees pile up, you get further and further into debt.  Then the credit card company increases your interest rate, because of your payment record and you find it even harder to meet your payment obligations.  Pretty soon you won’t even be able to make your minimum payment.  You need to do something fast to avoid late fees, and not ruin your credit.

The best way to make sure this doesn’t happen to you, is to pay your bill on time, and never miss a payment – although sometimes this can be easier said then done although you need to do everything, you can to make sure that you stay on top of things.  Here are some tips to help you make your credit card payments on time.

If something comes up, and you are not going to be able to make your payment, your credit card company is going to penalize you.  You might think what has come up is justified to having a late payment, but in the eyes of your credit card company short of an asteroid wiping out the planet, there really is no reason that justifies that late payment.  Your bill will include detailed instructions about your payment, and you need to follow these.  And that includes paying on time.

If you simply can’t pay the entire balance not to worry just make the minimum amount possible.  If you can pay more later on great, but make sure at least the minimum is not late.  Then you can make the additional payment later.

You should always have your minimum payment amount set aside, so when the credit card bill comes you’ve got it covered.  Once you have the minimum payment covered, you can concern yourself with paying more.  Paying at least the minimum ensures that you won’t be dinged with additional fees.

Occasionally your credit card company might offer the courtesy skip a payment, which can be very handy, but you need to check with your credit card company.  This courtesy lets you request a payment waiver if something comes up, and you don’t this months payment, but make sure to use it wisely because it’s a once a year offer.   Save it for a real emergency and not the kind, where you went out partying with your friends and spent your payment. Some credit cards waive the entire payment, gone, forget about it, but others make you pay it the following month.

Credit cards are really convenient, and most of us couldn’t picture life without them, but it is important that you have a good idea of what you’re going to be, and what you’ve put on your credit card.  It often goes on much faster than it comes off.  Therefore you should always want to stay on top of your credit card payments to avoid late fees.
