If things are going relatively smoothly in our lives, staying the diet course is something that most of us can manage to do. But when the going gets tough, we start eating.
Many of us eat for reasons beyond flavor and providing fuel for our bodies.  Often, we develop a connection with food that is based on certain emotions that we are feeling.  We tend to seek refuge in food when we are going through a particularly challenging period.   For those of us that are struggling with attempts at weight loss or trying to maintain a disciplined diet, these emotional triggers can be particularly troubling.

If things are going relatively smoothly in our lives, staying the diet course is something that most of us can manage to do.  But when the going gets tough, we start eating.  So how best to curb this emotional response to food is the question that we can all use answers to.  We need to find something that we can do in lieu of falling back on the food safety net.  Very few of us live a life that is devoid of stressful moments so we could all use a little help now and again.

A key to combating the emotional pull of food is to replace food with something else as a stress outlet.  In your work place, for example, try to create a place that is comfortable, personal and familiar to you.  Photos of loved ones or photos that have captured pleasant memories can be great stress relievers when things start putting you on edge.  It is a good idea to bring as many personal effects to your work place so as to create a safe refuge in your work space.  In this way, you’ll have a place to fall back on that doesn’t include food.

Just because your home is familiar to you, doesn’t mean that it is without its stressful moments.  Keep your weight loss momentum going full steam ahead even during the most trying home life periods as well.  If at all possible, create a space that is uniquely yours.  It may be an office or music room or simple corner that you can call your own.  Make that place as comfortable as possible.  Instead of heading straight for the cupboard to grab the bag of potato chips when things get a little tense, head over to your spot for some music, newspaper reading or journal writing, for example.

Do the same thing with your car.  Keep your favorite coffee cup handy, your cds at the ready and your cherished photos strategically placed.  The car can be murder on diets.  Eating and driving is a common pair that can easily derail even the best weight loss regimen.  If you can look forward to getting into the car to decompress from the difficult day and focus on the comforting surroundings that you have created, you might think twice before turning the routine drive into a snack fest.

Creating emotional safe places in every facet of your life can work wonders in reducing the non flavor and non fuel food moments.  A small shift like this will have a positive accumulative effect which will result in a higher success rate in your dieting and weight loss endeavors.
