You may have purchased an Irish number plate and want to transfer it to your vehicle already. How do you go about the transfer? What is the procedure to follow? How much will it cost you to transfer the number plate?

When you purchase an Irish number plate, you get an entitlement to it. You own the number plate and the next thing that you need to do to be able to use the number plate is to transfer it to your vehicle legally. The transfer should be done with the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Agency or DVLA.

To be able to do the transfer, you will have to prove to DVLA that you are the legal owner or registered keeper of the Irish number plate. You will have to present your certificate of entitlement. You get this when you purchase the Irish number plate.

The Irish number plate should also be transferrable. You will not be able to transfer it to your vehicle if it is not transferrable. The DVLA sets the standards as to which Irish number plates are transferrable and which are not. You will be able to check if your number plate is transferrable through the DVLA office.

If the Irish number plate is transferrable, you have to complete a V317 form. You can get this from a DVLA office. You will also have to submit necessary documents like the registration document, MOT, and copies of tax discs. There will be a transfer fee that you have to pay for. The transfer fee is currently £80 but this could change over time. You can contact DVLA or visit their website first before you proceed with the transfer of Irish number plate request.

After the Irish number plate is confirmed to be transferrable and after you have submitted all required documents and paid the transfer fee, your request will already be processed by DVLA. The processing time can take up to 4 weeks. This is an approximate processing time but usually the transfer is completed even before the 4 weeks is over.

Buying an Irish number plate is a good investment. Transferring it to your vehicle isn’t a problem as well. The transfer procedure of the Irish number plate to your vehicle is very easy and affordable. It will be completed in no time as well. Before you know it, you can already use the Irish number plate on your own vehicle.
