Antenatal Care information

During your pregnancy you will need to attend regular check ups, which will be carried out by either your midwife or your doctor. This is known as antenatal care. During this visit, you will be weighed and your blood pressure will be taken. This is so your doctor can monitor your blood pressure and any weight gain throughout your pregnancy and look out for certain conditions during pregnancy, such as pre-eclampsia, which can affect woman in later pregnancy. Your blood type will also be determined, and your urine will be tested for sugar levels and protein intake.

Your later antenatal care visits will take less time, as you generally just have your blood pressure taken, your urine tested and be weighed. Your abdomen will be measured and your stomach will be felt to see your baby's position and their growth. You will also be able to listen to your baby's heartbeat.
