During your pregnancy you will need to attend regular check ups, which will be carried out by either your midwife or your doctor. This is known as antenatal care. It is extremely important that you attend all of your checks. Your first antenatal care visit should be around the eighth or twelfth week of your pregnancy. Your antenatal care will look at certain aspects, such as which hospital you will give birth to your baby in and arrange a birthing plan with you.
Some of your check ups will take place either in your doctor’s surgery, at the hospital or in special antenatal care centres. You will find that your first visit will be the longest visit, as your doctor will ask you a series of questions related to your health and family medical history, such as any illnesses or any twins in the family. During this visit, you may also be asked to have an ultrasound scan, to determine how far you are into your pregnancy.
During this visit, you will be weighed and your blood pressure will be taken. This is so your doctor can monitor your blood pressure and any weight gain throughout your pregnancy and look out for certain conditions during pregnancy, such as pre-eclampsia, which can affect woman in later pregnancy. Your blood type will also be determined, and your urine will be tested for sugar levels and protein intake.
Your later antenatal care visits will take less time, as you generally just have your blood pressure taken, your urine tested and be weighed. Your abdomen will be measured and your stomach will be felt to see your baby's position and their growth. You will also be able to listen to your baby's heartbeat.
