Getting ahead in the modelling industry

Modelling is a tough profession, and there is a lot of competition out there. If you want to get work in the modelling industry then you need to be determined, and the more proactive and focused you are, the more chance you have of getting seen for modelling work.

Being the capital city, London is the hub for the creative industries. There are hundreds of modelling agencies in London, and joining an agency is your best chance of getting work, since they will have the right contacts and the ability to get you modelling auditions. Do however be wary when choosing an agency. Many modelling agencies profess to have connections to the industry and promise you work that they cannot get. You are far better off waiting for a credible agency than joining one that will do nothing for your career.

Professional models have portfolios, and if you are just starting out in the industry then you are unlikely to have a great deal of portfolio material. Nevertheless it is worth taking the time to get some professional photos taken and start building an initial portfolio that you can send to different agencies, to give them an idea of your look. Not only does it show them a glimpse of your potential but it will allow you to canvas far more agencies than if you were just wandering around London and calling into each agency personally.

Having said that, there is a lot to be said for the bold approach. Follow up your letters and applications by turning up in person. You have nothing to lose, and they could be impressed by your confidence – something that is very important for a professional model.
