One major aspect is teen pregnancy. Approximately thirty percent of pregnant teens opt to have abortion. Around sixty percent of girls under the age of eighteen who choose to have abortion have at least one parent knowing about the abortion and most of these parents are supportive of their daughters’ decision.
Approximately six million women in the US become pregnant every year.  Out of these, almost 1.2 million women opt for an abortion to end a pregnancy.  These women consider abortions because of a variety of reasons.

Contraceptive or birth control failure.  More than half of all the women who have abortions were using a form of contraceptive in the month when they became pregnant.     They are unable to care for or support a child     It is an unwanted pregnancy they want to end     They wish to prevent the birth if the child is found to have medical problems or birth defects     If the pregnancy is the result of incest or rape     If the woman has mental or physical conditions that are dangerous to her health if pregnancy is continued

In the US, nine out of ten abortions are conducted during the first trimester, or first twelve weeks of pregnancy. Of these, most are conducted within the first nine weeks of the pregnancy.

Very few abortions are conducted after sixteen weeks of a pregnancy.  There are some women who had to delay having abortions because they had problems paying for, traveling to or locating an abortion specialist.

There are legal restrictions on abortions in some states.  In some, women have to wait for twenty four hours after the first appointment.  For information on yours or neighboring state’s restrictions, contact the closest family planning clinic or Planned Parenthood clinic.

If the abortion is performed illegally without professional, proper medical care, it has a  much higher chance of complications compared to one conducted legally with proper   medical care.

In some states in the US, a parent’s consent is required for girls under eighteen seeking an abortion. But a minor girl in these states is also legally entitled to seek a court order to allow her to have an abortion without the parent’s consent.  More information can be obtained from a family planning clinic or Planned Parenthood clinic in your area.

Among teens and young women, the other most common reasons for seeking an abortion:

the awareness that they do not have the maturity required for having children     they know that they do not have the financial means to care for or support children     They are concerned that a baby would bring a complete change in their lives and it would compromise their future as well as the child’s future.  Large numbers of young mothers don’t even possess the education and the employment required to raise children above the poverty line.
