The approach of backlinks strategy has taken a giant step forward over the past couple of years.  The fact that there are so many websites and tools out there to help you generate backlinks goes on to prove one thing – they WORK!

A link, or anchor as it is otherwise known, is one of the most basic HTML entities.  As the name suggests, it is supposed to link you up with the information you are looking for.  For Internet Marketers like us, we use the anchor to link others onto our websites.  The aim is not to spam, but to provide a service or product that they are searching for.  It is a link that connects the buyer to the seller.

Anchor Text

The anchor text is whatever words are displayed on the webpage for a link.  Say if I am targeting the keyphrase Internet Marketing Tools, I would purposefully mention this keyphrase a couple of times in my article and backlink it to my website.  This keyphrase, hence, becomes my anchor text.

To illustrate how powerful an anchor text is, go to Google search and type “click here”.  You should see Adobe appear in the top few searches, if not at the top of the list.  Adobe has never released a product called “click here”, but millions of pages all over the web have been linked to them using those words.  Hence as a result, they are rank highly for it.

Internal Vs External Links

Links within the same domain are referred to as internal links because they reside on the same site.  While anchor text can help furnish Search Engines what a page is about, it is insufficient to rank your page on top spots if you rely solely on them.

In Internet Marketing business, external links, which are links from other websites are worth far more as they could drive countless traffic to your website.

NoFollow Vs DoFollow Links

A couple of years ago, the quickest way to boost your Search Engine rankings was to leave comments on every guestbook, forum and blog you could find, leaving a link to your site.  Back then, with relatively few people engaged in backlink strategies, this activity alone was enough to rank your page high in Search Engine rankings.  To combat this, the “Nofollow” tag was introduced.  This is a way for websites to say, “This link doesn’t count”.  You can do a quick check by looking at the source code of a page.

A NoFollow link contains rel = “nofollow”

However, do not dismiss that a backlink strategy is now ineffective because of these.  There are always 101 ways to get around it.
