There are two Meta tags that an advanced Marketer would take note of, and they are “Keywords” and “Description”.

Alright, they may not carry as much weight as links with the search engines, but they cannot be totally ignored. If fact, they are still very important.  One has to be very skilful in where and how these Meta tags are positioned in different parts of the web page or an article.

Why?  This is because frequency and location of the keyword that is being searched are important criteria that determine relevance of the content and hence page ranking.

As you may know, the search engine would generally consider the page more relevant if the keyword that is being sought is in the <TITLE>  tag or is in the Meta-keywords tag near the top of the page.  Many Marketers would place extra care to place their keywords in the Title tag but they often overlooked the importance of having the keywords in the first paragraph of the page.

Additionally, the sought after keyword has to be found repeated a number of times in the page in order to form an impression to the search engine that this is a more relevant page and thus improve its ranking.

There is a caveat, though.  Incontrollable flooding of keywords over the web page or an article will render the content as spam and thus irrelevant to the search engine.  The end result is the exact opposite, meaning that the search engine will “blacklist” the web page or omit the article relevance.

So you see, Internet Marketing is both an art as well as a science.  Blend your content tactfully to position the keywords in a way to attain the right frequency and location.  Stay away from excessive use or spamming.
