Blackfriars might not be as popular or well known as some of its Central London neighbours but that doesn't mean it doesn't have anything to offer. Here's a quick guide to some of the key buildings which can be found in Blackfriars.
<div>Blackfriars is an area of Central London which lies in the south-west corner of the City. The name Blackfriars originates from the black cappa worn by the Dominican Friars who moved their priory from Holborn to the area between the Thames and Ludgate Hill in 1276. </div><div><br></div><div>One of the most important builds in the area was the construction of Blackfriars Theatre during the Renaissance. The theatre began life as a venue for child actors and hosted some of the most amazing performances during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth and King James. The theatre was built by a group of entrepreneurs on the grounds of the former ministry in Blackfriars.</div><div><br></div><div>Blackfriars Theatre was built not far from Shakespeare's famous Globe Theatre - just the other side of the river and was acquired by the Society of Apothecaries in 1632. Unfortunately the structure was destroyed in the Great Fire of London but the Society rebuilt the Apothecaries Hall and the remains can still be found in the area today.</div><div><br></div><div>Another key building which can be found in Blackfriars is Unilever House. building which has been built in the Neoclassical Art Deco style. It's located on New Bridge Street, Victoria Building and certainly stands out from the crowd. The building has a tall, curving frontage which overlooks Blackfriars Bridge. The house was renovated in 1977-83 by Nicholas Munro who added a new north entrance lobby, while renovation work in 2004 created a roof garden on top of the building.</div><div><br></div><div>Other key Blackfriars buildings include the Blackfriars station, which is used by hundreds of London commuters every day. Other notable constructions include the Blackfriars Bridge, Blackfriars Railway Bridge and Blackfriars Millennium Pier.</div><div><br></div><div>Although Blackfriars might not be as high profile as its Central London neighbours, it still has a fair bit of architecture which is well worth taking a look at if your get the chance. </div>
