There’s a new brand of womens shirts in town – funky, retro appeal tees that make the modern trend for big company logos look more than a little silly.
Fashion statements are a bit of a minefield. It’s all very well trying to look fabulous with the latest cuts, the season’s colours and trends – but, after a while, even the slowest lady starts to realise that everyone else looks just like her. That’s always been the problem with fashion: it’s all about being unique, but it’s also about having what everyone else has. Anyone who wants to make a proper statement has to look a bit further and a bit wider – which is why this year’s range of womens shirts, with their retro-pop stylings and classic film inspirations, is a bit of a breath of fresh air.
The thing about retro style is this: a person can be “on trend” without looking exactly like every other person. That’s because retro inspired clothes are talking about an era, a feeling, rather than a particular look. Womens tees, this year, are moving into the retro zone, with some rather funky new companies (like British built My Icon Art) offering ranges of shirts whose inspiration comes from the 1970s and 1980s – using classic film images, superstars of the old school pop scenes, and even quality TV shows for their decorations. Womens shirts are getting a whole new brand of cool.
In part, this is all about reclaiming fashion for a slightly older generation. Teenagers have always borne the brunt of new trends in clothing design – but these days they’ve more or less missed the point, content, apparently, to guzzle up whatever the latest brand name is. Big letters splashed in gold and silver over tee shirts hardly makes a statement: so the trendy clothing manufacturers (like the My Icon Art folks mentioned above) have moved on to the 20-40 year old markets with quite startling success. Ignoring modern branding trends, they’ve taken their ranges of womens shirts back to a time everyone remembers as “good”: with those rose tinted backwards looking specs we all see the past through. We’re seeing classic quotes from film and TV; iconic images of old film stars, musicians and political figures; and tees inspired by the logos or famous albums of die hard supergroups across all sorts of trendy musical genres.
It’s a bit of a backlash, one suspects, against the frankly incontinent appeal of modern culture. Everyone knows that nothing is built to last any more – which is why big budget films are increasingly remakes of old classics, and why ancient bands keep revamping themselves and selling another million records. Back in the day, these new womens shirts are reminding consumers, things were just – cooler. Visionary fashion companies like My Icon Art have started to recognise this – and it’s a recognition that is already making itself felt at street level. Go into any busy bar on a Friday night and one is just as likely to see tees displaying quotes from 70s war movies as those inexplicable shiny iron on transfers that yell the logos of here today, gone tomorrow fashion houses. The revolution is upon us: and the new womens shirts are leading the way.
