Q. Do you ever get that burning sensation in your chest or throat after meals? If you answered yes, you probably had just experienced heartburn caused by acid reflux.
Heartburn is fairly common, with about 40 percent of the population suffering from heartburn once a month and around 20 percent at least once a week.

Acid reflux begins when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the valve separating the stomach from the esophagus, loosens and lets stomach acid back up in to the esophagus.

But what can you do about it? A simple lifestyle and diet modification is all it usually needs, and by following these easy methods not only will you get rid of acid reflux, you'll also feel totally revitalized.

1. Eat slowly and chew your food properly. Chewing promotes saliva which neutralizes stomach acid and by taking your time you allow food to digest properly.

2. Keep a log of what you eat and drink. If you experience acid reflux not long afterwards you will have an idea of what to avoid in the future.

3. Lose any excess weight. Excess fat can put pressure on the stomach and force open the LES allowing acids back up causing heartburn. Take up a regular program of light exercise, even a walk in the park can help you shed those pounds and leave you feeling great.

4. Control stress. Even though stress isn't directly linked to acid reflux, in stressful times routines can become disrupted and we often skip meals, exercise and sleep. There are lots of ways to control stress, like meditation and self-hypnosis.

5. Take herbal remedies, for example licorice root and slippery elm. They help soothe and reduce inflammation in the esophagus and also build a protective barrier from stomach acid.

6. Reduce fried and fatty foods in your diet as much as you can. Fatty foods are hard to digest, so they hang around in your stomach longer, increasing the acid levels of your stomach juices which irritates your digestive system.

7. Don't eat too much in one sitting. Try eating smaller meals during the day instead to aid digestion.

8. Eat enough fiber in your diet, which can be found in vegetables, fruits, and grains. Fiber is important for keeping your digestive system working properly and will help you to get rid of heartburn.

9. Stop smoking. This is without doubt the most important step to get rid of heartburn. Smoking weakens the LES, stimulates stomach acid production, reduces saliva, and directly harms the esophagus.

10. Get a good nights sleep. Heartburn can be at its worse when laying down due to acid running back up into the esophagus. Lift yourself up with pillows or buy a special acid reflux pillow.

Introduce these tips into your daily routine and I guarantee they will help you get rid of heartburn and leave you feeling totally refreshed.
