Tang Yuan or Yuanxiao is the special food Chinese people eat at the Lantern Festival .Lantern festival is also known as “yuanxiao” festival, which is a traditional festival in china.

Yuanxiao is a thin piece of glutinous rice dough with fillings wrapped up in it looking like a ball. It is also called “tangyuan”. It is said that the custom of eating tangyuan originated during the Eastern Jin Dynasty in the fourth century, which became popular during the Tang and Song Dynasty. The round shape of the tangyuan is a symbol of wholeness, completeness and unity. What's more, tangyuan in Chinese has a similar pronunciation with "tuanyuan”, meaning reunion. So people eat them to denote union, harmony and happiness for their family. As tangyuan has a similar sound effect with tuanyuan (meaning “reunion” in Chinese) and Yuanxiao Festival comes with the first full moon of the year, tangyuan has a symbolic significance of family reunion and people simply call the food yuanxiao.

Fillings for yuanxiao are various. There are meat, vegetables and spicy fillings. The common ones are sweetened bean paste, sugar, sweet-scented osmanthus, nut meat, hawthorn, pork, etc. Yuanxiao is also filled with a mixture of five different elements, including onion, ginger, garlic, chives and mustard. The mixture of the five elements has a double meaning of “reunion” and “endurance”.

Similar to the Mid-Autumn Festival, Lantern Festival celebration is considered an evening for family reunions.
On the night of the festival, people go to the streets to appreciate tens of thousands of colorful and brightly decorated lanterns of all kinds and shapes, an unforgettable and stunningly beautiful view of a virtual ocean of lights. The paper lanterns are carried by children through the streets, lanterns hang in homes and on storefronts. Modern festivities include fireworks and folk dancing.
