Reading is a very important skill that every child should learn at an early age. This is when a love for books starts to develop. If you try to incorporate reading as part of a child's learning experience, you are surely giving your child the best gift he or she can ever have.
A love for reading is not something that comes natural for most children. It is something that needs to be developed over a course of time with help from other people. This is where the role of parents as the child’s first teacher comes in. It is the role of parents to help their children discover the bookworm from within themselves.
The parents are the perfect role models for their kids. In the eyes of a little child whatever the parent does will always seem the right thing to do. Since your little ones tend to imitate what they see you doing, why not do the things you know can benefit them the most, like reading? If you want to see your children develop a reading habit, make reading a habit yourself.
Like any other habit, addiction for reading cannot be acquired in one sitting. Be patient with your child and give him space to do other things aside from reading. Once he starts to show some enthusiasm, feed him little by little with whatever good literature you can find in your home. Don’t shock him with a pile of thick medical or any science book you have in your grandma’s chest. It will only defeat your purpose.
Have your child understand that there is a big difference between learning from reading and reading for the sake of pleasure. It will be confusing for a child if different types of books are placed in the same section in your bookshelf. Make sure you don’t pile school textbooks and comic books together.
When you let your children ask questions after you finish reading them a book, you actually help them develop their ability to give purposeful judgment. Children love to ask questions so don’t discourage them to do so. Instead, create an atmosphere of praise whenever you are around them. This will boost their self confidence.
After reading a good story, don’t forget to tell your children that the greatest lesson they can learn from reading any kind of good literature is the lesson of enjoying life. Nothing can arouse the interest of children in reading than telling them that reading is not boring at all. In fact, a funny story never fails to bring to you into laughter!
