What to look for in a Tuscany hotel

The Tuscany hotel has a charm found nowhere else on earth – simplicity and luxury perfectly mixed. It is here that you will find joy, comfort and also style.
What is the best Tuscany hotel a person can find? The one that person can’t help talking about for weeks, months, even years after they’ve stayed. The region has a plentiful supply of good hotels to choose from, of course – but some of the best are the kind of places one only really finds out about when one has stumbled on them by chance – or when one has had them recommended by someone else.
The thing about Tuscany is this – it’s huge, and a lot of it is pretty much unaffected by tourism. That’s in the sense that, though tourism has of course come to the Tuscan hills, its wild coast line and its fertile valleys, the locals have chosen not to pay any attention to it – with the rather glorious result than one can find a Tuscany hotel where superb comfort and wonderful service are “disguised” behind a rustic front and embellished with a total disregard for tackiness.
Sound good? It is. A typical Tuscany hotel, the Montebelli (which calls itself an “agriturismo” – a hotel devoted to revealing the working land of Tuscany to it guests), is only found by lucky visitors after they stumble over it in a magazine article or have it recommended by friends. And that’s the way the locals love it. The people who work at Montebelli are a friendly lot – open, happy and only too willing to help, to show off their land and their working farm (the Montebelli was originally a typically rustic Tuscan farm house with its own land, which has now been restored to full working glory). But they’re not obtrusive and they probably wouldn’t care if you never knew their place was there. That’s the beauty of the Tuscan hotel – it welcomes you with open arms without ever making you feel like it’s been trying to entice you in under false pretences. In other words – while other tourist destinations fall over themselves to offer promises they can’t deliver, the hotel in Tuscany just quietly gets on with being outstanding – something the lucky few who cross its threshold find out for themselves.
The Montebelli is not the only hotel in Tuscany of course – and it probably isn’t even the only hotel in its immediate environment. Its success, and the success of the Tuscan hotels like it, is that it feels as though it might be. Everything about a Tuscany hotel feels so exclusive, so designed exclusively and particularly for you and you alone, that no amount of persuasion to the contrary could make you believe that there were other places like it.
Tuscany has always had a kind of backwards appeal: its rural environment, its stunning food, its working land – all of it is no nonsense, no frills and no lies. That’s why it’s such a wonderful place to be; and that, in turn, is why the typical hotel of the region can be the most astonishing place you’ve ever stayed. The best Tuscany hotel isn’t this; it isn’t that – it’s no hotel in particular. The best hotel in Tuscany is the one that finds you, personally, and walks straight into your heart.
