Sports memorabilia can be any item that is affiliated to a sport or sporting event. Something as ordinary as a ball cap can be considered memorabilia. Numerous collectors will collect nearly anything as long as it is autographed memorabilia.

People started to become very interested in collecting signed sports memorabilia in around the early 20th century when baseball was at the height of its glory. It was common practice for people to gather balls and have players sign them after the games. In the 1980s, basketball was a very popular sport and therefore basketball memorabilia skyrocketed in popularity. Boxing, football, and other popular sports that have seen a lot of popularity are known for their memorabilia as well.

As mentioned above, some people collect it because of sentimental reasons while there others will enjoy collecting because of profitable gains. There is a significant amount of money to be made in buying and selling sports memorabilia.

Autographed memorabilia can be worth millions of dollars. Generally the most valuable items are one that have been autographed by legendary sports figures or from sports figures that are now long gone. As well, a rare collector item will hold more value than an average item.

How to Collect

The first thing you should do when collecting signed sports memorabilia is to get an item to be signed. You can either purchase this item, or collect something at a sports event when you are at a game. Other individuals are looking for something a little more special such as a fly ball into the stands to catch, or asking a player for their jersey.

The next thing you should do is get the autograph and this can be very easy if you are not very bothered as to whose autograph you get, because there are many players that will gladly give you an autograph. However, if you want the autograph of a specific player you may have to do some sweet-talking in order to get the autograph. The more popular players are more challenging to approach to get the autograph.

Collecting signed sports memorabilia can be a very amusing hobby. Trying to procure the perfect item to be signed and then actually getting the autograph can be as if you are on a mission for a sports fan. No matter what your reasons are for deciding to start collecting memorabilia, you will have a wonderful time doing it.
