Each year for the past decade or so, more than one million people in the United States have undergone one form of cosmetic surgery or another. Many more non-surgical cosmetic procedures are performed each year than surgical procedures. Outside the US, many cosmetic procedures are performed as well. Obviously, the popularity of cosmetic surgery is undeniable, but which procedures are the most popular and what do they accomplish for the patient? The top five procedures of 2008 will be explained here.
Topping the list of most popular cosmetic surgeries is the breast augmentation. More than 350,000 women had this procedure done. With an augmentation, an implant is placed behind the muscle of each breast to increase their size. This cosmetic surgery is often accompanied by a breast lift, though the breast lift procedure itself did not make the list of top five cosmetic surgeries.
Closely following the breast augmentation procedure is liposuction. More than 340,000 patients chose to undergo this procedure in 2008. Also known as lipoplasty, this procedure literally sucks the excess fat from a person’s body. What areas do you find troublesome? Some common areas to receive liposuction include the buttocks, thighs, hips, neck, and arms. This cosmetic surgery is not meant to replace diet and exercise for losing weight, but it can be useful for helping a patient maintain their new weight once they have the procedure done.
Next is cosmetic eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty. This procedure, performed on nearly 200,000 patients in 2008, can greatly improve the overall look of the patient’s face. Bags under the eyes are eliminated without any scarring because the creases in the corner of the eye conceal where the doctor makes his incisions.
Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is next on the list of popular cosmetic surgeries. Just over 150,000 people had their noses worked on in 2008. Whether to improve the function of the nose or to rid themselves of less than ideal genetic features, this procedure has proved to be successful in most cases that it was performed.
Number five on the list is abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck. In situations where mothers have given birth and are sure they are done having children, they can regain their pre-pregnancy abdomen with this procedure. Nearly 150,000 individuals had this cosmetic surgery in 2008. There are many other kinds of plastic surgeries available today, but these are currently the most popular within the United States.
