Sports first aid is not only needed by individuals who take part in competitive activities, it has been pointed out.

Writing in the Pottstown Mercury, Dr Alan Cooper said that simple exercise can result in people sustaining damage. In such circumstances, men and women may benefit from using sports supports.

By engaging in any physical excursion, individuals can get an injury, the medical expert noted.

However, this should not put people off getting involved in healthy exercises, he added.

Dr Cooper commented: "We all know that regular exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise makes you look good and feel good - promoting greater muscle strength, endurance and flexibility, weight control and cardiovascular fitness."

However, too much can lead to problems that require sports first aid, he went on to warn.

He said: "You don't have to be a competitive athlete to get a sports injury, which is simply an injury that commonly occurs during sports or exercise."

Such problems can happen to people at any age, although they become more common as individuals get older, he added.

Dr Cooper went on to suggest that women can be more susceptible to them because of their body structures - potentially meaning they would benefit from sports supports to a greater extent.

Sporting injuries can generally affect the muscles, bones or connective tissue and can be caused by improper training, insufficient warm-ups and using the wrong equipment, he stated.

The expert added that sports injuries fall into two primary categories: acute and chronic. Whereas an acute injury involves an active event that causes trauma, such as a collision, a chronic injury happens gradually.

The number of people suffering such difficulties may increase over coming months as Olympic fever begins to take hold ahead of the 2012 games in London - with people across the country being inspired to take up various activities.
