The newspaper made its comments in the wake of the prosecution of a teenager from Melksham, who pleaded guilty to committing such crimes.

He was sentenced to a non-custodial 18-month intensive supervision order in relation to the offences, which mainly involved houses in the town.

Items such as money, mobile phones, handbags and wallets were among those stolen by the 17-year-old from unsuspecting homeowners in the area.

The summer can be a particularly busy time for thefts of this nature, as many consumers head off on holiday and leave their properties unattended. However, residences remain at risk throughout the year and people need to stay on their guard regardless of the season.
