Choosing the right crops to plant is crucial in having a thriving urban farm. It is important to choose the right crops so that you can increase the productivity of your mini farm at home. However, choosing the right crops isn't as simple as it may seem. Some crops only grow in certain weather conditions while some die if forced to grow on a different condition; that is why it is very important to choose your crops well so that your money and effort won't be put to waste. Here are some tips on how to do so.

The first thing that you have to do is to take note of the current season. Like what I've said earlier, some crops only grow in certain weather conditions. Basically, there are two types of crops; the cool season crops and the warm season crops. Cool season crops should only be planted when the weather is cool. It could be during spring, fall or even winter. Cabbage, asparagus, broccoli, onions, parsley, turnips and spinach are some examples of this type of crop. On the other hand, warm season crops should only be planted, obviously, when the weather is warm. These crops are perfect to grow during the summer. Some examples of this crop include sweet corn, cucumber, tomato and pumpkin.

The next thing that you have to do is to assess your gardening skill and the amount of time that you can allot everyday. If you're just starting on this hobby, you may start with plants that are easy to grow. Some plants require a lot of tending and attention so if you're just new to gardening, better choose low maintenance crops.

Gardening is a very fulfilling hobby. It does not only help you improve yourself, but the environment as well. Happy farming!
