The key phrase there is “properly run.” An affiliate management program that you are managing poorly is going to be nothing but a giant headache for you, one that is only going to produce a little bit of extra cash and a few extra sales. A poorly run affiliate management program will be a lot more work, without a commensurate pay off. The best way to ensure that you create an affiliate program that runs well is to get it right from the beginning, from the first day that you start your own affiliate program.

The first thing you want to decide is whether or not you are going to create your own affiliate network from scratch, or if you’re going to work from one of the larger affiliate networks. Both have their pros and cons.

Large affiliate networks can be great because once you join them and your product is accepted to their marketplaces you will immediately have access to thousands of affiliates. The fact that these networks are so easy to join is their gift and their curse. It’s great that you will immediately make your product available to so many resellers, but the ease of joining and lack of barriers means that anyone can join- whether they are good affiliates or not. Even though you will have a defined pool to draw from, you’re still going to have to put in some work to attract and keep the top performing affiliates you want on your side. On the plus side, many of these come with their own affiliate management program software.

If you are creating your own affiliate network one person at a time, you’re going to be putting in a lot of work to attract people. If you already have a product that is proven to sell well than you will have an easier time attracting high performing affiliates, but if you are just starting out it might be difficult to convince the best of the best that your product is worth spending their time and energy promoting. You will also need to hunt down and find the most appropriate affiliate management program software for your program’s needs on your own.

In many ways the method that you choose will depend on whether you are selling a new product or a proven product. Often building your own affiliate network off of the main affiliate networks and websites is a much better idea for those who are already established and can prove that they are a worthwhile investment. If you are new to the game and have a product that might be seen as more of an unproven risk, than deciding to start your own affiliate program might not be a great idea, and you will probably do better by cutting your teeth on one of the larger sites.
