The applications of the modern ceramic filtration system

A ceramic filtration system has to be able to withstand enormous temperature extremes and toxic environments. Thanks to modern filter designs, it can cope with almost anything.
Modern industry is a powerful, complex and frightening thing. It can deal in processes whose temperatures and effluvia would have been unimaginable even 100 years ago – manufacturing, cleaning, oxidising and alloying process that vent exhaust gases at temperatures of up to four hundred degrees centigrade. A ceramic filtration system is required to clean these hot gas streams efficiently – safely removing pollutants and dangerous chemical compounds from them before they are expelled completely from the system in question.
The uses and application of the ceramic filter are obviously as wide as the uses and applications of modern high heat industries. Some of the most interesting and important uses are the ones one would probably never think of, immediately, if one were asked to list some high temperature applications for which a ceramic filtration system would be necessary – removing bio hazardous materials from crematoria smoke, for example, or scrubbing out the CO2 in submarine breathing air environments.
Ceramic filters work in much the same way as “normal” filters – just at much higher temperatures. The best (like the ones made by UK company Glosfume, which developed, manufactured and marketed its own ceramic filters after realising that the market was unable to supply it with filters good enough to fit in its own filtering system) work with increasing efficiency the hotter they get. The rising heat actually makes the ceramic nodes in the filter denser and harder to crack – which means filters like the ones Glosfume now puts in its own ceramic filtration system are able to operate with one hundred per cent efficiency right up to their maximum temperature threshold.
A ceramic filter is always doing an important job (like cleaning bio hazardous waste from the effluvia of cremated corpses) – so it can’t really afford to be anything but one hundred per cent efficient. That can put a pretty big strain on it, which is why a lot of ceramic filters have a pretty short life span – they work perfectly for their whole life, but that life is not very long. That was actually the reason why Glosfume started to build its own: they felt that their ceramic filtration system should be able to fit a filter that lasted for as long as possible. The Glosfume filter is now world renowned for its efficiency and life – it, like the others, retains its one hundred per cent efficiency rating all the way to the edge of its temperature envelope (around 450 degrees Centigrade for comfortable operation); but, unlike the others, it doesn’t crack or explode as it cools down. Ceramics have always been very good at managing high heat (that’s why they are used in the exhaust system of Stealth fighter planes) – but they’ve never really been able to handle cooling. A modern ceramic filtration system, fitted with these new and better filters, is able to withstand cooling as well as heating – making it indispensable in the often extremely hazardous environments and industries it is built to work in.
The march of progress, as ever, goes on. And in these applications that’s something to be devoutly thankful for.
