Tourists are welcome in Tuscany, for sure – but only as long as they embrace the area and its way of life for what it is. Tuscany is where time didn’t happen: just achingly beautiful sunsets, red tiled roofs and the kind of food most people only ever get to dream of.
The Tuscan hotel is a real opportunity for a few lucky tourists to step outside of the normal routines of holidays and really live in a different culture, a different kind of place – to be, for a week or two, one of those healthy, happy peasants that always used to be idolised in the writings of the UK’s own romantic poets. A hotel Toscana is the kind of place Keats might’ve gone on holiday, if there hadn’t been so many revolutions to go fight at the time. It’s the kind of place where poetry and spirituality seem to make a lot more sense – where food isn’t an indulgence or anything base and earthy but the rich, fulfilling stuff of life. Not many people get to experience the Tuscan Maremma – it’s only got room for so many, after all – but everyone who does comes back changed.
