Hiccups in babies usually worries new mothers but they should not worry about it because it is absolutely a natural phenomenon among babies. During the hiccups, the reflex in their chest can be easily seen. Many medical professionals believe that it helps the baby to strengthen the newly developed and working respiratory system. This is similar to what crying does to strengthen a baby’s lungs.

Usually, babies in their first six months of birth are seen hiccuping a lot and parents wonder if it might be hurting their child but there is nothing to worry about. These hiccups do not cause any harm to the baby.

Nevertheless, parents should be careful enough to distinguish between choking and hiccups and the baby is having trouble in breathing and is changing color. If you feel baby is panting for air then immediately provide the baby with oxygen through your mouth and take her to the hospital immediately.

Infants start hiccuping in the mother’s womb from the first three months of development. However, since they are so tiny at that time, mothers cannot feel these hiccups although they become quite visible during the next three months. These hiccups are a natural process to prepare the child to breathe after birth.

Because the babies are familiar with hiccups from the time they are in the womb till their birth, they become so used to it and do not get disturbed even after birth. Hiccups can go on for extended periods of time such as half an hour or more.

If you are getting bothered and worried, then there are some ways to soothe down the baby hiccups. There is no medicine for hiccups and none is needed as well. Just try the traditional ways to cure the hiccups.

You can make the baby sit on your lap and gently pat her back. Try to give her milk in small amount, it’s best if you breast-feed her if not then use a small size nipple so she does not gulp large amount of milk.
