While an education involves classrooms and homework, it also involves learning how to manage your own life.  This includes both your personal possessions and your time. It is critical for young students develop strong organizational skills, and the centerpiece for organization will be their school locker.

To properly organize a student's locker, you must create a comprehensive list of what his locker will contain and how he will use his locker. Try not to overdo it; a crammed locker inevitably becomes cluttered.  Here are three basic organization tools to help him or her get and stay organized.

The first tool I recommend is the seemingly simple magnetic pencil holder. This device provides students an easy way to avoid spilling their pencils or pens all over their storage space and keeps the writing utensil they need within quick and easy reach.

I would encourage you to provide your student with plenty of magnets for the inside of his locker.  Most lockers are made of some grade of metal, so magnets should almost always be functional. Your child will then be empowered to place critical documents on his locker door or locker wall for easy viewing.  And unlike with tape, with magnets your student can easily remove or replace these documents as needed.

The third must-have locker device to provide your student in the new school year is likely the most obvious: locker shelves. Locker shelves will help your student better manage the most important possession of their education: textbooks. Your student should place lighter, smaller textbooks on high shelves and larger, heavier textbooks on low shelves.

Don't just buy any shelves, though. Decide whether you need robust shelves or flexible shelves. Your student may require adjustable shelves if he changes his roster of books and binders through the school year, but if he just needs strong shelves then select a heavy, static plastic shelve system.

So I hope this helps you best equip your student for the new school year. Just start with magnetic pencil holders, a good set of magnets, and an appropriate set of shelves for his new locker. These simple organizational tools will go a surprisingly long way towards ensuring a successful and productive school year, and successful and productive school years have a habit of snowballing into successful and productive lives.
