As college football season is now nearing the stretch run, the BCS polls were initially released two weeks ago. While it is not much of a surprise, the majority of the controversy once again surrounds at large, mid major conference teams in Boise State and TCU. The first poll had Oklahoma as the consensus number one, with Oregon following. However, with the Sooners falling at Missouri, a shakeup was expected. Boise sat at number three in that original poll, while TCU sat at four. With Oklahoma falling, one of the two would be locked into one of the top two spots, right?
Wrong. Auburn leapfrogged not only the two at large teams, but Oregon, who is likely to be the number one team in the AP Poll, as well. Auburn has looked impressive, and remains the only unbeaten SEC team left. However, is it an SEC bias by the BCS? It is tough to find rationale to rank Auburn over Oregon, considering how impressive the Ducks have looked on both sides of the ball. And as for Boise and TCU, was the LSU win really enough to make such a jump?
Now, don't get me wrong. This story is not meant to discredit what the Tigers, and Heisman candidate Cameron Newton have done this season. They are a championship worthy team. It is just another question of how this system works, and how under wraps everything seems to be. Playoffs need to happen in college football, that is blatant. This season is showing that more so than any other. Boise and TCU have both whomped every opponent in their path, as well as beating top 25 teams from major conferences.
It is hard to keep them out of the picture, and some are thinking it may happen even if some of the top teams end up with one loss a piece. If we should take anything out of these happenings, it is the fact that we need to start letting the players on the field determine who is the true champion, or who can get a shot to be that champion. A computer cannot play the games, thus it should not be deciding fates.
