Ben Sherman was born as Arthur Bernard Sugarman in 1925, in Brighton, UK. As he saw no future in his birthplace, at the age of 21 he moved to the United States via Canada and became an American citizen. Apparently he was wed three times, and his third marriage that was to the daughter of a Californian clothes manufacturer turned out to be a major turning point in his life.
In 1961 he returned to his homeland where he bought a small factory
that manufactured shirts. Around that time, he also changed his name
from Bernard Sugarman to
Ben Sherman.
In
the early 1960s, the Oxford-cloth American button-down shirt brands
such as Brooks Bothers were very popular amongst the American jazz
community and of course had a huge impact on the jazz fans in London
who were very enthusiastically buying the product that was imported
from the United States.
Sherman, being influenced by the impact
that the American button-down shirt had, decided to manufacture his
own, based of course on the very popular button-down design. So, in
1963 Sherman’s line of shirts is launched with great success! The Ben
Sherman’s Original label is now in existence!
One year later,
Sherman opens a store in the very trendy and popular Carnaby Street in
London, and in 1967 he opens his first shop in Brighton, on Duke
Street. In 1968 Sherman’s first female line is launched and the boys’
wear collection follow in 1970.
Mid nineteen seventies and
Punk rules the British Music scene and of course Sherman’s button-down
shirts have become an indispensable part of their dress code. As years
will come, Sherman’s designs will grow to be a vital part of the future
music scene’s wardrobe and he will be crowned as their king up until
his death in 1987.
The new millennium and Sherman’s originals
are still going strong. In 2004 the company, together with Team Great
Britain, was an official sponsor of the Olympic Squad and in 2006
Sherman stores cross the Atlantic. The first store opens in New York
City to be followed in no time by another one in the west coast, Los
Angeles, and another one in Las Vegas.
Ben Sherman has been
rightfully given his own place in history. His brand has been
celebrated over the decades by the entire nation and has become over
the years an icon amongst the British fashion industry. He has managed
to rule Britain in his own way.
