Some of the prerequisites of becoming an athlete include being energetic, speedy and alert, as only then you can perform well in the game. Being lazy and lacking enough energy are not the ideal characteristics, as you won't be able to keep up with the games and performance levels of the other players. Having enough stamina to compete with the other athletes and give the best to your team in highly important.
At times, even if a particular sportsman has enough capability to do well in the game, he or she may not be able to do so, due to lack of practice and exercise in his or her routine. When one's lifestyle does not consist of such activities, it becomes difficult for the body to come up with the required speed and fervor. Engaging in a number of exercises that help in increasing one's speed and agility is a sensible decision in such a situation, which helps to a great extent in the long run.
These exercises are not only meant for people who perform poorly, but for those athletes, too, who are good at the sport but end up lacking sufficient speed and agility. Sprints are one highly useful form of exercise which should be followed by athletes.
Sprints basically include running at a great speed for a distance of about twenty five yards. Once this is practiced a number of times, it helps in increasing the overall speed of the athlete, which plays a vital role in almost any game, such as basketball or soccer.
You can try out different methods with your usual sprints, such as including cones to them. By placing cones at certain intervals on the ground, in opposite directions, one can practice running in between them while taking turns. This lends a hand at being good at putting in less amounts of energy and being able to take turns while running.
For children who are young athletes, simple exercises can be used to increase their performance. One such useful method is that of keeping a ladder on the field and running over it that is, skipping the rods that come in between.
Following such exercises plays a vital role in advancing the speed and agility, improving coordination and reflexes and promoting flexibility of the body.
