Unfortunately today, even with
all of our knowledge pertaining to fish and game, some fishermen still
aren’t getting the complete picture. Additionally, they are taking
some extremely bad habits and passing them on to the next generation
of anglers as more and more I see pictures of young teenage boys proudly
holding up 5 pound fish, dark in color and likely older than the children
who were proudly parading them about on the other ends of their fishing
lines. Obviously, a more senior angler had failed to inform these new
anglers about the catch and release code of conduct.

Bass that are located in the
northern areas of Ontario, Canada tend to have a significantly shorter
season of growth than the bass that can be found in the southern region.
This means that it actually takes a much greater time for these fish
to reach sizes such as 3 to 5 pounds. In fact, bass that reach these
sizes are the very bass that end up keeping the bass population of the
water both healthy as well as strong. While eating bass is in no way
a crime, it is always important that the new generation of anglers is
taught that the larger size of the species should always be returned
to the water. If it is any consolation, the smaller fish are the ones
with the better flavor anyways.

Personally, I have succeeded
in catching a great deal of smallmouth bass from such lakes as Lake
Erie and Georgian Bay that were the ideal size for frying up in a frying
pan. Lakes as large as these can usually survive a decent amount of
harvesting. However, the northern areas of Ontario should be quite aware
that smallmouth bass between 3 and 5 pounds should always be returned
to the water unharmed in order for them to continue creating even more
bass.

Educating new anglers about
bass conservation is an extremely important aspect of sportsmanship
particularly when it comes to the more susceptible smaller lakes as
these are the fishing locations that are in need of all of the additional
assistance that they can get in order to maintain the health of their
bass population. As anglers, it is up to us to use our common sense
when adhering to the established limits. These are just what they are
– limits. If we do not respect the happy medium and discontinue taking
the larger of the species, then the species will soon no longer be there
to fish for the coming generations.
